Flash back to Monday since I really haven't had time to write this up since. I get home from class, blender some soup, grab packages off the front porch. Cards from parents and grandparents, a TRSI manga order, and a box from [livejournal.com profile] raisai, which I figured was her returning my books and maybe a card. Decided to put off opening it until I could have her online so that she'd get my reaction. Sit down to (nasty) optics homework. I also notice a giftwrapped package in front of Terriermon and get slightly suspicious.

Now, b00ga wishes me a happy birthday on IRC; I ask who told. I tend to not publicize these things, and figured that with busyness and all most people would forget (for the record, in addition to everyone mentioned here, [livejournal.com profile] konoha remembered--and first, at about 1am). b00ga says [livejournal.com profile] lady_fae mentioned it on Thursday. Suspicions rise, since she hasn't said a thing all day, and now I know she didn't just forget.

[livejournal.com profile] pdelahanty comes home, yells in a hi. Since he doesn't come and throw the Terriermon package in my face (figuratively), I know either it's for someone else or there are bigger plans afoot--and it's so much more fun to not try to connive and calculate.

When the doorbell rings and I hear whisperings at the front door it's become pretty darned obvious. In a few minutes, in comes the cake, with Fae and Victor and Pat. Ice cream cake, sparklers because I can't blow out candles. I celebrate by eating with a spoon instead of blender (brushing my teeth right afterwards--I unhooked the mouth to brush my teeth, really, just happened to eat ice cream while I was at it. Mmmmmm.)

Fae and Pat managed to hit gifts that fall squarely in that category of "well, I really do want it, but just can't justify spending the money on now." Which, to my mind, is what good gift selection's all about, finding something that someone's too stupid to get for themselves. Pat gave me the first few volumes of the Big O manga--particularly significant since we've been watching it together as almost a ritual. Fae and Victor found a copy of Disaster Report, for which the Japanese name is far cooler (being Japanese) and thus completely impossible for me to remember. I've been eager to play it ever since the first information about the Japanese release started coming out--this is one of those "we'll never see it Stateside" games. Of course it'll remind me of other unusual games...

So at this point I open up raisai's package (you have too many names dear, I never know which ones I should be using where--and of course I'm tempted to post this where you can't see it just to needle you behind your back). Fae and Pat are joking that she's going to upstage them. Now, I have to say, she and I have been talking for months about the pain of finding someone the perfect gift and just taking a risk on something--in fact, her little note inside the shipping box mentions as much. I pull out the gift, noticing it's padded with a number of get-well paper cranes.

At this point I should have remembered that she's been threatening to get even with me for buying meals and movie tickets at ACen, and gone back to the original plan of opening it online instead of with everything else.

Because...as I uncover it, I notice it's a shrinkwrapped DVD box. Cool...first thought was she somehow got the Someday's Dreamers box early. Then I notice all the writing is in Japanese. Then....my jaw would have dropped if it didn't have metal and rubber all over it.

The Video Girl Ai R2 box. New. OOP for 2 1/2 years. Which I couldn't afford when it came out and have wanted ever since I saw how nasty the US release wound up being. The auction goddess found one. I hate to think at what ungodly hour she was awake to bid on that.

And, of course, when I talked to her that evening she was all nervous that she'd misremembered or something. No, no, I'm just mad she went all overboard.

So, after that, we went and got some cheap chinese (wonton soup actually blenders very well and I got a chance to chat with Victor as we went to pick it up--he and everyone else are being very patient with my mumbling), watched the Sox win, and called it a night. I went to bed very happy; it's so fulfilling when a few friends get together and surprise you with an evening that seems, in every regard, calculated to think about what you want or need--down to appropriate cake and candles.

I'm glad you enjoyed the evening. Once you get the scrapyard removed from your mouth, we'll go out and REALLY party. ;)

So, your birthday was a day before mine...

Belated happy birthday, if you don't mind me saying it too ^^; Glad you had a good time on Monday - spending a birthday in the company of friends is one of the best ways to spend it.

*hugs*

You wanted me online so I could see your reaction to me returning your books, eh? It’s too bad I was running around on Monday, had I known what would happen I would have made an effort.

Anyway, I’m happy you liked it and I did not go overboard, really. Plus, in the set of amazingly lucky things that happened such that you should get that, on time even, the auction ended at the very reasonable time of 9:01 am. :)

It’s wonderful to hear you had such a fitting get together. *Adds even more stars to her eyes when she looks up at Patrick, Fae, and Victor*
