Anybody know what you're supposed to take as a painkiller for a fracture? Apparently anti-inflammatories are out (as they limit bloodflow), so no ibuprofen. Similarly, percogesic (which ROCKS), is an antihistamine, therefore vasoconstrictor, so not recommended. I guess I could always stick with gin, but I suspect that's not indicated either....

My-mother-the-nurse says acetominophen is fine for a fracture, and if you want anything stronger than that,go to a doctor and get codeine or oxycodone.

My father suggested alcohol, and my mother indicated that that is not a good long-term pain management plan, but it won't make your foot fall off.

Honestly, these days I tend to trust nurses more than doctors (long story). I'll have to see if I still have straight acetominophen around anymore...almost anything I do to myself these days works fairly well with ibuprofen (and I drink enough that I avoid acetominophen, anyhow). I'm not allowed to see a doctor on pain of a few hundred bucks; the toe was reduced by an NP. I forget...did I give you the story last week?

The overlap between wilderness first aid and student health services is scary.

(I submit that alcohol is a vasodilator, and thus should help a distal fracture, right?)

I was going to ask my-mother-the-nurse what she thought, but that seems beside the point, now.

We also tend to trust nurses more than doctors, which makes sense if you know our mother.

oh jeeze what did you do??

I searched on the internet, which was no help at all. So Dr. Jenna totally recommends liquor. *blah blah blah legal stuff, not real Dr.... blah blah not responsible for tentacle growth from fractured bone...*

I climb, I bike, I hike...so I break my toe by walking past a bookcase in my house. Seriously...I never break anything interesting.

I submit that breaking your jaw by going head first over a pothole counted as interesting. And let me know if you need me to pick up some tylenol before I see you this evening.

Try Aleve. It has Naproxen.

Naproxen is a NSAID (anti-inflammatory), so not recommended. Acetaminophen/tylenol/paracetamol is pretty much the only over the counter drug I'm aware of you can take for pain that's not. Unfortunately it's not very strong so may only take a slight edge off the pain, if that.

Jon - if that's not doing it, go to the doc and ask for something stronger.

Oh yeah, if you decide on alcohol (which does work pretty good for pain actually), you may want to hold off on the acetaminophen as it can cause liver poisoning. Pick one or the other.
